On May 20, Deloitte & Touche released the results from its Memorial Day Travel Survey. More than 1,065 adults in the U.S. were surveyed May 12-14, 2008 about how their travel plans may have shifted this Memorial Day in response to today's high gas prices. Key highlights include:
- Almost one-third (30 percent) of Americans plan to travel this Memorial Day weekend
- However, almost one fourth (23 percent) say they have altered their Memorial Day weekend travel plans due to the rise in gas prices
- More than one in ten (12%) say they have cancelled their travel plans
- A similar number (11%) say they are vacationing closer to home
- Of those planning road trips this Memorial Day weekend
- The average road trip is expected to be 91 miles from home
- Almost six in ten (57%) say they have opted to stay closer to home
- Of those households with children under 13
- Two out of five (39%) say they plan to travel this Memorial Day
- 35% have altered their travel plans due to high gas prices
- A full 20% have canceled their vacation plans due to the rise in gas prices
